Saturn enduring

The Saturn Cafe is 30 years old this month. How many local restaurents are that old? Even Tiny’s and Portola House is gone. I still like the Saturn but I get I to a different part of the menu now. More salads. And like riding the Tilt-a-whirl at the Boardwalk, I’ll never experience the Chocolate Madness with chocolate chip cookie dough instead of ice cream ever again.

Thirty year old restaurants: Crepe Place, O’Mei, Shadowbrook, the pizza place at Mission & Swift, Taco Bell and McDonald’s on Mission, to name but a few.

And that “Tyrolean” place in Ben Lomond. I don’t know if I would could the Brookdale Lodge. The Acapulco would count, although it is completely different inside since the earthquake.

Cole’s, Mobo, El Palomar, Vasilis, Falafel Santa Cruz, Crow’s Nest, Zachary’s, the Baglery,Kelly’s, Jack’s, Casablanca, Bocci’s Cellar, Pizza My Heart,Stagnaro’s, Gilda’s,and the place at the end of the wharf all seem to me to have been here as long as I can remember but I have no idea how long.

That would be “Andy’s End of the Wharf.” Best fries in the world.

Some not-quite-thirty-year-old restaurants:
Pizza My Heart founded in ’81 (from their website),
Kelly was the second or third employee hired at Gayle’s in Capitola. We were UCSC classmates in the Spring of ’80; she hadn’t opened her own shop yet.
Falafel Santa Cruz also opened in the ’80s. Earlier in that location was a hot dog stand, if I recall correctly.
